Milk, by definition of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) , is, without further specification, the product from milking complete and uninterrupted, in a hygienic , healthy cows , well fed and rested . The milk from other animal species should contain the name of the species that do .

Milk is classified according to the mode of production , composition and physical requirements , chemical and biological agents , thus receiving the designations of A, B or C. It is worth noting that with the Normative Instruction no. 51 , milk type C was abolished in the South, Southeast and Midwest on 01/07/2005, at 01/07/2007 and the North and Northeast.

The main function of milk is to nourish ( feed ) the pups until they are able to digest other foods. Furthermore, it functions to protect the gastrointestinal tract of chicks against antigens , toxins and inflammation contributes to health and metabolic , regulating the processes of energy production (especially glucose metabolism and insulin ).
It is the only fluid that the offspring of mammals ( or baby breasts) eat until weaning.

The milk of domesticated animals is part of the food grown in most civilizations : beef, mostly, but also sheep , goat, horse, camel , etc. . Man is the only animal that continues to drink milk as an adult.

Milk is the basis of many dairy products such as butter , cheese, yogurt , among others. Very often the use of dairy products in food , chemical and pharmaceutical products such as condensed milk , milk powder , whey , casein or lactose.
